April Cushing

April Cushing has a long established rapport with the Hickman Mills School District. April has worked in the Hickman Mills School District on the Hickman Mills Prevention Coalition since its creation. Working to help students foster a safe, healthy and drug free atmosphere in the Hickman Mills community. A safe environment at all levels of education in our school district has been a priority. Ranging from the school itself to returning home is a prime need for any school district. Hickman Mills has dedicated teachers and students who deserve a safe place to teach and learn the foundations of their future.

With a safe environment, students can focus on their education. Our test scores need to improve. Classrooms that focus on the education of the students improve test scores. Enforcing the discipline policy helps maintain a safe school in which education can flourish. No teacher should have to spend classroom time on disruptive elements that steal time from those students who wish to learn and excell.

Graduation rates improve in a positive environment. Hickman Mills School District has excellent students that any school district and community can be proud to send on to college and the world.

When the School District and the Community work together good things happen. April Cushing thought of having the 50th Anniversary for the Ruskin Height Tornado Memorial. That small idea bloomed into a wonderful event with Ruskin Heights Homes Association and Hickman Mills School District working together. Students contributed art, stories, and a play that dramatized the Ruskin Heights Tornado that killed 39 people. People came from across the country to this event. The Monument was enhanced with plaques that listed the fallen loved ones. Detailed the path of the tornado. A Memorial Tree Arbor was created with ground markers for each victim. Students, community and former residents of 1957 were brought together to share stories, research and a great deal of love and closure for families.
