What’s the most critical issue facing your district? How would you address it? Be specific, but brief (limit 50 words)
Critical issues facing our school district: Consolidation of our two high schools, discipline, Bannister Mall Area/redevelopment, and foreclosure of approximately 400 homes.
I have been involved in both the Hickman Mills Area Plan and the Longview Tract Steering Committee used to help our area. I serve on The Ruskin Vacant Task Force where we have been very busy. We have been actively cleaning up our area with available community service and we partner with the schools with area clean-up.
With the vote that was given to the district (4/3) Ruskin as the high school, safety and discipline is been at the top of the list. I want to continue working with the school board regarding enforcing the policies and procedures; ensuring that they are carried out fairly and correctly; and to ensure a smooth transition for ALL students in the school district.
Why should voters pick you over your opponent(s) Limit 50 words:
I have lived and attended schools in the Hickman Mills district. Living off and on in this community, I have learned and worked to better our community and seeking to help/ enhance our school district. With funding being cut for all districts, the Hickman Mills District has been hard at work making changes to improve learning techniques for our students. Recently, we implemented a fantastic “Accountability Plan” to advance our school district forward and to achieve academic success. With this recent consolidation decision, I feel unity, patience, and actively seeking a positive approach to solve conflicts and resolution will be the key to a stronger education for tomorrow.
I thank you for the opportunity to respond to your questionnaire and look forward to your support.
Respectfully,
April Cushing,
Candidate for Hickman Mills School Board
