April Cushing grew up in Hickman Mills and has been an intregal part of this community with her work at improving our neighborhoods and schools. April earned a Masters Business Management 1979-81 and Bachelor of Science 1972-1976. She is running for a seat on the Hickman Mills School Board to improve our schools for our children and our community. Her dedication and service to Hickman Mills has been a great benifit to all of our community. April is an asset in all that she does:
April Cushing has worked with Community Creating Oppurtunity (CCO) in neighborhood cleanups. She was key in securing KC HARP grants for homeowners in the Ruskin neighborhoods. A job that was performed by other neighborhoods CDC's. April fought to make sure that our area recieved all the grants for home improvement. She worked with people to insure that the forms and process was done correctly. When there is a problem in our area people call April for help.
.April has worked in the Hickman Mills School District on the Hickman Mills Prevention Coalition since its creation. Working to help students foster a safe, healthy and drug free atmosphere in the Hickman Mills community.
April has been the Office Manager for Ruskin Heights Homes Association for seven years. Her work with neighbors from Ruskin Heights and Hills has been above and beyond the job description. She represents the Ruskin at meetings downtown for code enforcement to improve our area, PIAC funding for special projects, and is well known at City Hall.
April Cushing is the President of the Ruskin Neighborhoods Community Development Corporation. The RNCDC works with the area towards a positive future with grants.
The last two years April and Jerry Mitchell have headed the Ruskin Community Service Program cleaning the streets and abandoned homes two Saturdays every month. Tons of trash and limbs have been removed from our Ruskin neighborhoods.This year they will be their own site able to utilize workers during weekdays as well. April is always present and works with people to assist them with their problems.
As Ruskin Hills Vice President, she has worked updating their office and bring her experience of cleaning up the neighborhood.
April has trained with the Citizen Police Academy and works with the South Kansas City Police Department in providing information and resources to help them solve issues in our neighborhood.
April represents Ruskin Heights Homes Association at the Southern Kansas City Chamber of Commerce meetings and events.
April Cushing was involved in Hickman Mills Area Plan Steering Committe that has set standards for our positive upgrading in community. The Longview Sprayground and football fields were part of the Longview aquatic center which April served on the Longview Tract and Steering Committee planning the project..
She serves on the Ruskin Vacant Task Foce to prevent vacant homes from becoming blighted and detrimental to the community.
