Homes Associations

April Cushing

April Cushing has worked in the Ruskin Heights Homes Association as an Office Manager. She began her interest in attending home association meeting. With her education in business she was offered a part time position to replace the secretary. That "part-time" job became full time quickly as her predicessor left. April reorganized the office system and improved efficiency. She went far beyond what her salary entailed not only in duties as well in time and efforts above and beyond the secretary job. April represented Ruskin Homes Association at the Southern Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. She attended meetings downtown at City Hall, and established contacts with Kansas City resources that has truly benefitted not only our home association, but our community as a whole.

When it comes to new and innovative ways to solve old problems, such as bill collection, trash and neighborhood problems. April Cushing has what it take to pursue solutions that others may miss. Instead of just complaining about problems, April has done the dirty work herself to clean up our area. She was also very instrumental in the KC HARP grant for the Ruskin Neighborhoods: Heights, Village and Hills. Working with Ruskin Hills people as well as Ruskin Heights owners, April made sure that all qualified applicants received the much need repairs and restoration provided under the HARP grant. Other homes associations were fortunate to have experienced CDC's to provide experience and staff. We however, did not. April and Ellen Cook learned the system and with LaReita of Hills filled all of our grants. She made sure owners had all of the required paperwork and documentation and would hand deliver them to City Hall.

The Community Service Program was another innovative way to clean up our area. April and Gerry Mitchell have run this program for two years using the KCPD South Patrol clents as a resource to work Community Service in our area. The second and fourth Saturday have been taken form 8 to 12 cleaning up the problems in our neighborhoods, as well as adding beautification project to our parks and greenspaces.

April is also Vice President for Ruskin Hills. She is updating their office procedures to improve billings as well as other procedures. Her vision of having all neighborhoods working together to make Hickman Mills a place to be proud of has been seen in her dedication to helping people. Naturally she has been attending the School Board meetings for years in support of their actions and endorsing the needs for our schools as well.
